確定肉兔的初配年齡，主要根據體重和月齡來決定，在正常飼養管理條件下，公母兔體重達到該品種標準體重的70%時，即已達到體成熟，可開始配種繁殖。一般小型品種初配年齡為4-5月齡，體重2.5-3千克。中型品種為5-6月齡，體重3.5-4千克。大型品種為7-8月齡，體重4.5-6千克。因公兔性成熟年齡比母兔遲，所以公兔的初配年齡應比母兔遲1個月左右。為了防止早配和近親交配，在家兔性成熟前應公母分開飼養。
